1895

The more the public is interested in artists, the less it is interested in art.

The work of art is to dominate the spectator – the spectator is not to dominate art.

When a work of art is produced on stage, what is being tested is not the art, but the stage.

All words by Oscar Wilde, from a 19th Century La Gazette edition.
